Interactive 3D court comparison

Tennis vs pickleball court size

A doubles tennis court is 78 × 36 ft (23.77 × 10.97 m); a pickleball court is 44 × 20 ft (13.4112 × 6.096 m). Tennis has about 3.19 times the marked playing area. See the difference at the same scale, not in separately sized pictures.

Dimensions are measured to the outside edges of court lines. Pickleball measurements use exact conversions from feet and inches (1 ft = 0.3048 m). Tennis dimensions use rounded ITF metric values, so converted feet may differ slightly from nominal rule dimensions.

How to compare the courts

The courts are shown side by side at the same scale. Switch the tennis format between singles and doubles; pickleball stays the same size. Choose meters or feet for measurements and the table. Drag to orbit, scroll or pinch to zoom, and use Top view to compare footprints. Dimensions shows or hides measurement labels; Show surrounding space adds the site outlines. Reset comparison restores doubles, meters, both display options and the default view.

Different lines, different roles

Tennis has doubles alleys and service boxes, with service lines 21 ft from the net. Pickleball has no doubles alleys and has a 7 ft non-volley zone on each side. The shaded middle strip in the pickleball diagram is the kitchen, not a tennis-style service box. The singles tennis net has posts 0.914 m outside the singles sidelines. Singles sticks on a doubles net are not shown. These dimensions are a reference, not complete construction drawings.

Playing area is not total space

The tennis outline follows the ITF international-competition recommendation, about 120 × 60 ft. Pickleball uses 64 × 34 ft for tournaments and new construction, rather than the smaller 60 × 30 ft minimum playing surface. Switching tennis to singles does not shrink the surrounding tennis site. Verify local requirements, clearance and access before planning a conversion.

Tennis vs pickleball court questions

How much bigger is a tennis court than a pickleball court?

A doubles tennis court is 78 × 36 ft, compared with 44 × 20 ft for pickleball. Its marked area is about 3.19 times as large. A singles tennis court is 78 × 27 ft, about 2.39 times the pickleball area. These ratios exclude surrounding space.

Are singles and doubles courts the same size?

In pickleball, both use the same 20 × 44 ft court. In tennis, both are 78 ft long, but singles uses a 27 ft width and doubles uses 36 ft. The extra strips on either side are the doubles alleys.

Can four pickleball courts fit on one tennis court?

Not inside the marked tennis doubles rectangle: four pickleball playing rectangles already exceed its area. Some conversions use the larger tennis site, including runoff, but an area ratio alone does not prove a safe layout. Check each court’s required playing surface, separation, fencing, access and net placement with a qualified designer.

Can you use a tennis net for pickleball?

The regulation heights differ. A tennis net is 36 in at the center and 42 in at the posts; a pickleball net is 34 in at the center and 36 in at the sidelines. Post and sideline measurements are not interchangeable. A shared installation needs appropriate net adjustment and supports, not just new court lines.

Is the pickleball kitchen the same as a tennis service box?

No. The pickleball non-volley zone extends 7 ft from the net on each side and restricts volleying. Tennis service lines are 21 ft from the net and define service boxes; they do not create a non-volley zone.
